FAQs
What Are Floating Stairs?
Floating stairs are a stunning design feature with hidden supporting structures, creating the illusion that the stair treads are floating. Their sleek, minimalist look makes them a top choice for open-concept homes. Our floating stairs are “prefabricated,” meaning they come ready to install with ease.
These single (“mono”) stringer stairs are renowned for their unique design. Floating stairs are perfect for any indoor or outdoor space, residential or commercial. To enhance the floating effect, you can personalize them with various railing options, including glass, cable, or rod railings, with hidden components in the posts.
How Much Does a Floating Staircase Cost?
The cost of floating stairs varies widely due to their high level of customization, but Mono Stringer Floating Stairs typically range from $5,000 to $30,000. While cheaper options exist, they tend to be limited to basic designs that may not perfectly suit your home. Our Floating Stairs start at $14,500, offering custom designs, engineering, and durable construction built to last for years.
Think of buying floating stairs like purchasing a car—factors such as the model, finish, and features all affect the price. When planning your floating staircase, you’ll need to consider the floor-to-floor height, the number of turns in your design, your choice of wood species and stain for the treads, and the type of railing that best suits your style.
How Are Floating Stairs Installed?
Before installation, we take precise measurements and create detailed drawings of your space to ensure your stairs fit perfectly. Our team custom-fabricates each component of your stair system to these exact specs. Most of the prep work is done in our factory, meaning no on-site welding or fabrication is needed.
Since your stairs are pre-fabricated, installation only takes a couple of days. Our team handles everything from start to finish, so you won’t have to juggle multiple contractors or live in a construction zone for weeks. We take pride in our attention to detail, ensuring your stairs look fresh and flawless when we’re done.
What Is a Metal Stair Stringer?
A “stringer” is the spine of your staircase—the crucial support structure that holds your treads and risers in place. As the backbone of your stairs, the stringer plays a key role in the overall strength and stability of your staircase. Thanks to their sleek style and durability, metal stair stringers have become an increasingly popular choice for contractors and DIY enthusiasts.
Historically, stringers were made from construction-grade lumber and installed in sets of three—one on each side and one in the center for extra support. In traditional stairways, the stringer was often hidden within the walls, concealed by drywall or paneling, becoming an integral part of the home’s structure.
What Are Floating Stair Treads?
Our floating stair treads are crafted from high-quality hardwood, offering both durability and style to create a design that’s as sturdy as it is eye-catching. These treads are perfect for adding that Impressive design statement to your staircase.
We offer over 15 different wood species, including African Mahogany, Red Oak, Walnut, Ash, and Brazilian Cherry, each customizable with a variety of finishes to suit your style. Our thick stair treads are built by carefully cutting, planing, and gluing hardwood pieces together, ensuring they’re strong and long-lasting.
Modern stair treads typically range from 1.5″ to 4″ in thickness, with widths from 36″ to 72″ (custom sizes available to fit your project needs). Thanks to the premium quality of the wood, our treads are designed to withstand a lifetime of use and wear.
What Railing Options Are Available?
Our modern railings serve as the perfect complement to your floating stair system, offering both function and style. Choose from cable, glass, or rod railing systems to elevate your design.
Rod Railing – Rods gracefully curve to follow the shape of your stairs and corners, maintaining their integrity and never sagging over time.
Glass Railing – Innovative standoff pin technology ensures easy installation. Custom-order options are available for both indoor and outdoor or coastal projects.
Cable Railing – Hidden components inside each post keep the hardware out of sight, maintaining a sleek and seamless look.
Your railing system is like a modern art installation. All posts are pre-drilled and shipped with your customizable components, ready for a hassle-free setup. Post heights are available in 36″, 39″, or 42″.
