Installing Cable Railing

To install cable railing, secure posts at proper spacing, run the cable through the posts, and hand tension it to minimize deflection. Tighten each cable with an Allen wrench until taut, starting from the middle run and working outward. Maintain a maximum cable spacing of 3 ⅛ inches and post spacing of no more than 4 feet to ensure strength and compliance with the 4-inch Sphere Rule. Express is a simple, DIY-friendly cable railing system, perfect for small to medium-sized projects. Easy to install, budget-friendly, and designed to enhance your space with a sleek look, it’s ready to ship the next day and ideal for both DIYers and contractors.

Tools Needed to Install Cable Railing

You’ll need basic hand tools, such as a power drill and an impact driver, to install cable railing. Special tools for cutting and crimping fittings into the cable are essential. Tensioning fittings and middle post covers are also necessary. Bellointeriors offers a complete Cable Rail Installation Kit, including a cable cutter, cable crimper, and other essential tools for tensioning and finishing your project. Additionally, component kits with all the necessary fittings for both wood and metal posts are available.

How to Care for Indoor Cable Railing

Indoor cable railing maintenance is similar to outdoor care but with fewer debris issues. Regularly inspect and clean the posts and infill. Use Stainless Steel cleaning wipes for rods, cables, handrails, and posts. Clean posts and handrails with all-purpose cleaner and purified water to avoid spots. Use a wood furniture cleaner for wooden handrails and re-seal the finish as needed.

How to Care for Outdoor Cable Railing

Inspect and clean the posts and infill 3–4 times a year for outdoor cable railing. Remove debris from handrail brackets and post mounting areas, and check the tension regularly. If cables or rods move more than 1″, re-tension them. Treat posts and infill annually with Marine 31 Sealant and Marine 31 Polish for protection. For coastal areas, apply them twice a year. For wooden handrails, re-seal when the finish begins to fade.

How Much Cable Do I Need for My Railing?

To determine how much cable you need, calculate the length of each cable run, add one foot, and then multiply by the number of cables required. Add all runs together for the total cable needed. For example:

  • Cable Run #1 — 12ft + 1ft = 13ft x 10 cables = 130ft
  • Cable Run #2 — 18ft + 1ft = 19ft x 10 cables = 190ft
  • Cable Run #3 — 8ft + 1ft = 9ft x 10 cables = 90ft

Total Cable Needed = 410ft

We sell 5/32-inch stainless steel cables in 400-foot and 100-foot spools. It’s a good idea to round up to ensure you have enough, as unopened spools can be returned.

Make a Plan for Your Deck or Staircase

Start with a sketch of your deck, balcony, or stairway, including measurements and handrail height. This ensures you purchase the correct materials and eliminates confusion. Photos of the space can also help verify the necessary products for your project.
